What is the Tellington TTouch® Method?

Tellington TTouch®

is a method of working with animals that has proven effective in reducing stress, fear, aggression and anxiety; as well as modify behavior, increase flexibility and—when combined with veterinarian care—aid in recovery. The approach is gentle yet systematic and helps animals to better cope with different and novel situations. It improves confidence, focus and learning.

With the use of gentle touches, body wraps and groundwork (a variety of exercises with equipment) we engage and calm the animal's nervous system as well as teach the animal to move in non-habitual ways. Since an animal that is stressed or anxious cannot learn, the incorporation of TTouch® allows me to aid an animal (in my case dogs, cats, birds and rabbits) by teaching them how to relax. The animal can then focus on learning new ways of coping with situations in which he previously reacted with fear, concern or anxiety.

Another terrific benefit of TTouch® is that it provides the guardian with the tools to engage with their animal in ways that are non-threatening—establishing or deepened the trust between them. As part of a TTouch® session you will learn how to use wraps and perform bodywork.

This service could be incorporated into a training session with your dog or as a TTouch® only session.

Put Your Wrap Where Your Mouth Is

While I was living in the Bay Area, I had to meet with a client who had a very "dog aggressive dog".
I liked both the client and the dog but I also felt a pit in my stomach every time I had to meet them for a training:  The dog was one of the sweetest dogs I have ever worked with but she went from “zero to 250 arousal” in a matter of seconds!

The minute Reggie saw a dog  five blocks away- mind you, or heard the “clink-clink” noise from the tag of a nearby dog, the presence of a dog behind a fence, Reggy would leap her almost 80 lbs straight up in the air. Really- just like her guardian had warned me!

She would also bark and lunge at dogs as she took turns jumping up high, pulling forward and keeping her ground making it almost impossible to peel her away from the scene.

After the first session, I changed my approach all together. Besides re-thinking my training plan, tools to use and looking for a more appropriate location to work with Reggy I decided that I needed to do something for myself so that I could feel more “grounded” and present while working with my client and her dog.

It occurred to me that if I regularly put a TTouch® wrap on a dog to calm him, I should just put my money where my mouth is and wear one myself!  What I ended up doing was wearing a half wrap across my chest under the shirt. No, the client had no idea that it wasn't only her dog that was wearing a TTouch® wrap :).

This simple step made all the difference on how I felt while driving to the job and while working with Reggie!!  I could feel this constant pressure that gently reminded me to stay “cool”…  and breathing more deeply became almost automatic so yes, I felt calmer and because of that I could think more clearly while I remained stress free.

I have gone back to using the wrap whenever I am feeling tired, emotionally vulnerable or when I just want to feel a bit more connected and present with the work I do with animals. One last thought, there is no reason why people could not use a TTouch® wrap under their clothes when they are going to an important/stressful meeting such as a job interview, traffic court or a first date! Just make sure the ends are secured so that they do not inadvertly “peek-out” from under your clothing… or you might have some explaining to do!

The TTOUCH® Puppy

Testimonial for the TTouch® Puppy Class:
"We were having a really tough time with Edie and weren't sure if we'd be able to keep her after adopting her. Almudena gave us hope that she wasn't beyond saving, and with the techniques she showed us we began to see immediate improvement. Her  PuppyTTouch classes were especially useful and valuable and are highly recommended for any dog owner, and particularly those with dogs dealing with anxiety, nervousness, or bad behavior" David & Desiree Larkins, Santa Fe, NM.
Start the life of your puppy on the right paw with the Tellington TTouch® Puppy class!
Puppy-hood is a period of intense learning.  What a dog learns at this stage could very well determine the dog’s future behavior and overall confidence. The TTouch Puppy is an ideal class prior to a basic obedience class but it is NOT  meant as a substitution for puppy socials since most of the work we will be doing will be on leash.
Through a series of groundwork exercises, touches and body wraps, your puppy will learn:
To feel comfortable and secure in a myriad of novel situations, including noises, stepping on different surfaces, gentle restrain and grooming etc.
Self-control
Confidence to explore new surroundings with curiosity instead of fear
To be calm in the presence of dogs and unfamiliar people
Improved focus and overall learning ability
Increase trust in guardian
Guardians will learn:
About their pup’s specific learning challenges
How to encourage learning while building confidence
How to build trust and independence in their pet
How to work with their pup when difficult or scary situations arise in everyday life
